Changes to legacy hardware compatibility | Xibo Blog

This blog is intended to give advance notice regarding an upcoming technical change that may impact your older hardware connecting to Xibo Cloud. By June 30th 2028, Xibo Cloud will no longer be compatible with HTTPS connections for devices running Android 4, as well as older versions of webOS and Tizen. We are sharing this timeline with you well in advance so you can plan your hardware lifecycle and network infrastructure over the next couple of years.

Why is this happening?

HTTPS connections rely on a chain of trust between the webserver and the device making the connection. Every device has a built-in “VIP List” of highly trusted organisations called Root Certificate Authorities. That list should be kept up to date over time as security updates are installed. Old organisations are retired and new ones are added as security standards change. These older devices will not have received any kind of security update in more than 10 years now, and so the time has come when that static list is too out of date for us to continue to support it into the future.

It is already challenging to support these older devices, and we rely on a special kind of certificate called a cross-signature to do so. This specific cross-signature required is scheduled to expire during 2028. Once it expires, older operating systems that do not receive modern security updates will no longer recognise our Cloud certificates automatically, resulting in failed connections. That will be the case for the majority of websites accessed from those devices, not just Xibo’s servers, and is likely to also affect self-hosted Xibo installations.

What are my options?

We recommend evaluating your network and choosing one of the following paths:

Upgrade hardware (Recommended): The most secure and reliable long-term solution is to plan a phased hardware refresh to replace these legacy devices with modern displays or players that receive active OS and security updates. All of the devices listed above are no longer supported by the original manufacturer. You can find Xibo’s certified hardware partners on our Player App page. An external media player could be connected to an existing SoC display to extend the display’s life.
Firmware update: If you’re using older webOS or Tizen devices, and there are firmware updates available listed above, then applying these will provide the required updates to the root certificate authorities used by the device.
Manual certificate installation: If replacing the hardware is not feasible, you may be able to manually install new root CA certificates onto each device to maintain connectivity. Please note that this will require manual intervention on every individual device, and that the required root CAs may also change over time.

Next Steps

There’s no immediate action needed right now. However, we strongly encourage you to audit your current device inventory and begin factoring this upcoming change into your future planning.

Seamless Transition: No Content Disruption

While the CMS looks completely refreshed, the robust engine you rely on remains untouched. If you are upgrading from version 4.4, there is absolutely no learning curve. Everything you know still works exactly as it did. There are no new player app requirements, and your existing layouts, schedules, displays, and user permissions will all carry over flawlessly without modification. It simply looks and feels better. (Note: A few features, such as the older horizontal navigation bar, have been retired in 4.5. You can view the full list of removals in the Xibo CMS v4.5 release notes).

Upgrade on Your Terms

Because version 4.5 introduces a substantial visual change, we have disabled automatic upgrades so you can choose when your team sees the new interface.

Xibo v4.5 rebuilds the CMS front end delivering a modernised, mobile-friendly interface. Do I need to relearn the platform after upgrading?

No. Everything works exactly as it did in v4.4 , the interface simply looks and feels better. There is no learning curve.

Yes. Your layouts, schedules, displays and user permissions carry over without modification, and there are no new player app requirements.

How do I upgrade to Xibo CMS v4.5?

Automatic upgrades are disabled for this release so you choose when your team sees the new interface. Cloud-hosted customers upgrade manually via My Account; self-hosted customers update their docker-compose file to the release-4.5.0 tag and redeploy.
