With the release of 2.2.0 you can create Reminder Notifications when scheduling Events.
Once you have completed the form fields to schedule your Event click on the Reminder tab...

...use the form fields to create Reminders for this Event.

Your created Notifications will be shown in the Notification Centre and if you have ticked Notify by email you will get an email too!
