Introducing improved User Password Management

The next article in the run up to 1.4 stable release will take a look at the improvements made to User Password Management. Up until now user passwords and user management in general has not always been clear in Xibo – we have tried to improve the situation with 3 new features/improvements: * Users can change their passwords without having access to the user administration page * Administrators can set a regular expression to test password complexity * Administrators can override users p

Introducing DataSets

As most of our followers are aware the 1.3 series development preview release has been a long time in the making, in fact we have been working on it for well over a year. As it is getting close to completion and ready for a 1.4 stable release (a big milestone for us!) we thought it would be a good idea to pause and reflect on the new features we have managed to cram in. The first one we are going to look at is the new DataSets feature. Overview DataSets are a new Xibo feature to design and d

Launching the new website

The Xibo project has been lucky enough to have 2 designers come forwards after our plea for help with this site. As a result of their selfless work and attention to detail we have a new site design which went live today. Bradley Morris [http://bradleymorris.co.uk/] is a freelance web application developer based in the North East of England and is responsible for the new WordPress template. Paul van Dun is a graphics designer and developer from The Netherlands and is responsible for the new lo

Designer still needed

Today marks the 1 year anniversary of our request for some help with the Xibo site design! A big thank you to all those that helped over the last 12 months, we appreciate every effort made.. even if we didn’t quite get there. Given that a year has past, we thought it was appropriate to being asking again… The Xibo site was put together as a temporary measure over 3 years ago and was always designed to be a functional home until Xibo gained a reputation and warrented a better site. We thought t

Web designer needed

Xibo.org.uk [http://Xibo.org.uk] has been the Xibo project’s home on the web for over 2 years now. When we initially started the project this website was hastily put together and although we did a functional job we feel it is lacking in visual appeal when compared to the sites of other digital signage solutions. It is our intention to refresh the content on the site to showcase Xibo more effectively and hopefully entice more people to start enjoying the benefits of Open Source Digital Signage.

C++ Developer Needed

Work on the Linux (soon to be cross-platform) client continues to progress well. As more people are coming on board and testing the app, it’s become clear that the browser embedding technology (Awesomium – which recently converted from GPL to a closed license) is beginning to hold us back and is causing problems in some areas. Thankfully there is a light at the end of the tunnel in the shape of Berkelium [http://berkelium.org/]. It does a similar job to Awesomium but is BSD licensed and builds

Signing OggCamp

What a weekend! Even Dan, who’s considerably fitter and (as he keeps reminding me) just slightly younger than me was feeling drained on Saturday night – but such is the lot of the conference digital signage tech! I’m a veteran of last year’s OggCamp [http://oggcamp.org/2009/start] (which took place in Wolverhampton) and a long-time listener to Linux Outlaws [http://linuxoutlaws.com] and the Ubuntu UK Podcast [http://podcast.ubuntu-uk.org/] so I put our names in to the hat to help out this ti

General Xibo Chat moved to Facebook

The forum available on Xibo.org.uk [http://Xibo.org.uk] has been closed due to lack of activity and confusion over where to get support. The Xibo project uses Launchpad Answers [https://answers.launchpad.net/xibo] for all support related communication and will now use our Facebook [http://www.facebook.com/pages/Xibo-Open-Source-Digital-Signage/253590815456] page for all general communication. Look forward to hearing from you all via these new locations.

Layout Exchange hits 1000 downloads

The Xibo Layout Exchange is a place for people to showcase their layouts and for others to download professional quality layouts for use on Xibo displays. We launched the exchange on the 5th September and in a little over a month the layouts on there have been downloaded over 1000 times! [http://xibo.org.uk/download/1/]There are currently 17 layouts available from a variety of contributers. The most popular is Cool Garden by Andy Pattenden  ( http://www.andypattenden.co.uk) [http://www.andypa

LugRadio Live and OggCamp

[http://oggcamp.org]Just a heads up that it’s the “last ever” LugRadio live coming up next month in Wolverhampton, UK. Having attended last years “last ever” LugRadio live, I’m looking forward to going along again this year for the usual mix of Open Source, humour and grown men in racoon suits. LRL used to be a two day event, so when it was announced that it was only going to be a one day ‘do’ on the Saturday, Ubuntu UK and Linux Outlaws got together to arrange a free culture barcamp on the Sun

Xibo on Launchpad Blog

Xibo has been using the Launchpad platform for nearly a year now. It’s a key piece in the Xibo development jigsaw puzzle and lets the development team keep things organised in one central place, and lets you log blueprints (enhancement requests), support requests etc to keep your Xibo install working properly. Dan and I were approached by Matthew Revell (of LugRadio [http://lugradio.org] fame – amongst other things) to answer a few questions on Xibo and how we use Launchpad. The resulting inte

Xibo Layout Exchange

Making Xibo layouts look great can take a long time, and if like me you’ve got zero artistic tallent it can be a real struggle. What you really need is a place to download ready-made background images to make your displays shine. So, we put one together exclusively for Xibo users. Working with Jim Packer [http://www.jimpacker.com] and Andy Pattenden [http://andypattenden.co.uk], we’ve put together a few layouts to kick things off, but we’re hoping Xibo users everywhere will contribute back th

Training Materials

I’ve recently started training other staff at work on Xibo so now seemed to be a good time to start on some training materials. I’ve put together a short document “Introduction and Basic Operations” which serves as a quick start guide for new users, or as the basis of a 30 minute training session to be delivered in conjunction with the notes. I’ve uploaded the finished document in to the Wiki as PDF and ODF documents for easy printing/editing. They’re licensed under a Creative Commons BY-SA li

1.0.1 New release archives

It’s come to light that there was a small but crucial error in the way that the 1.0.0-rc3 and later release tar balls and zip files were created. This is causing issues with clients not updating their schedule information in some cases – mainly on Microsoft IIS webservers. We’ve put up new versions of the release archives this evening with a -1 suffix (1.0.1-1). There is no need to replace your current installation unless you are experiencing problems, although we recommend using the suffix 1
