Xibo on Launchpad Blog

Xibo has been using the Launchpad platform for nearly a year now. It’s a key piece in the Xibo development jigsaw puzzle and lets the development team keep things organised in one central place, and lets you log blueprints (enhancement requests), support requests etc to keep your Xibo install working properly. Dan and I were approached by Matthew Revell (of LugRadio [http://lugradio.org] fame – amongst other things) to answer a few questions on Xibo and how we use Launchpad. The resulting inte

Xibo Layout Exchange

Making Xibo layouts look great can take a long time, and if like me you’ve got zero artistic tallent it can be a real struggle. What you really need is a place to download ready-made background images to make your displays shine. So, we put one together exclusively for Xibo users. Working with Jim Packer [http://www.jimpacker.com] and Andy Pattenden [http://andypattenden.co.uk], we’ve put together a few layouts to kick things off, but we’re hoping Xibo users everywhere will contribute back th

We are proud to announce the release of Xibo Version 1.0.3! This release of the Xibo project contains 15 bug fixes and 2 feature improvements and we therefore recommend that everyone upgrade. A big thank you to all the contributors [https://launchpad.net/xibo/+topcontributors] to the Xibo project, without their help and support these bugs and improvements would not be happening. Please ensure you read the release notes. They contain important information on the upgrade process, changes in fun

.NET Client Improvements

Xibo is moving towards a cross-platform client written in Python. The cross-platform client is shaping up to be a very polished [http://xibo.org.uk/forum/?wpforumaction=viewtopic&t=18.0] Xibo player. However it is not here yet and we realise that there are a few rough edges to the .NET client. With the pending release of 1.0.3 comes a few improvements and tweaks to the .NET client that should iron out the rough edges. Reduce Screen Flicker The screen flicker occurred mainly in 2 places, when

Exciting Developments

Dan and I periodically get together to have a look at progress with the project, and last night was the first chance I had to see the work Dan has been doing over the past few months towards the first in the 1.1 testing release series. All I can say is wow! There’s support for translations (thanks to everyone who’s contributed translations so far over in Launchpad [https://translations.launchpad.net/xibo]), display groups, overhauled permissions system, overhauled user login/sessions, and now h

Version 1.0.2 Released!

We are proud to announce the release of Xibo Version 1.0.2! This is primarily a bug fix release – although a couple of new features are exposed in the UI that were pre-existing or required minimal additional code to implement. The release notes are available on our Wiki here: https://xibo.org.uk/manual-tuttle/en/release_notes_1.0.2. You can download this release from out Launchpad project page here: https://launchpad.net/xibo/1.0/1.0.2. We recommend all Xibo installations be upgraded to

Training Materials

I’ve recently started training other staff at work on Xibo so now seemed to be a good time to start on some training materials. I’ve put together a short document “Introduction and Basic Operations” which serves as a quick start guide for new users, or as the basis of a 30 minute training session to be delivered in conjunction with the notes. I’ve uploaded the finished document in to the Wiki as PDF and ODF documents for easy printing/editing. They’re licensed under a Creative Commons BY-SA li

1.0.1 New release archives

It’s come to light that there was a small but crucial error in the way that the 1.0.0-rc3 and later release tar balls and zip files were created. This is causing issues with clients not updating their schedule information in some cases – mainly on Microsoft IIS webservers. We’ve put up new versions of the release archives this evening with a -1 suffix (1.0.1-1). There is no need to replace your current installation unless you are experiencing problems, although we recommend using the suffix 1

Xibo on Linux Outlaws

Work on the cross-platform client is progressing well, however we want to make a few changes to libavg [http://www.libavg.de] to allow it to display more types of media – most crucially web pages (and hence flash, java etc). Fab and Dan from Linux Outlaws podcast [http://linuxoutlaws.com] very kindly put out a request for a C++/OpenGL coder to come forward and help us with the changes needed to make this happen at the end of episode 93 [http://www.linuxoutlaws.com/podcast/93]. I’ve been a lo

1.0.0 Delayed

We had hoped to release 1.0.0 today, but it’s not quite ready yet. Dan is making some final changes this evening as a result of testing I’ve done on the release this week. We also received a couple of last-minute bug reports which we felt were worthy of inclusion. If you’re itching to know what made the cut for 1.0.0, you can get a sneek peek here: https://launchpad.net/xibo/+milestone/1.0.0 Assuming all goes well, we’re aiming to release this week, hopefully tomorrow but that may slip to Satu

Guidelines for Contributing

Thank you all for the interest expressed in contributing to the Xibo project. We really appreciate all the offers of help! We realise we have been a little slow to react to these offers of help – mainly because we did not expect such a fast response after releasing an Xibo release candidate! We have now taken the time to put together some guidelines for the ways in which people can contribute and the procedure to follow. You can find these guidelines on the wiki here: http://wiki.xibo.org.uk/wi

A move to OpenID and MediaWiki

In the interest of streamlining the Xibo Projects documentation and development efforts we have taken two steps. Firstly we have a new Wiki (http://wiki.xibo.org.uk) which replaces the old “Labs” pages (http://labs.xibo.org.uk/blueprints). We will be using this new wiki for: * Developer Documentation * Feature Specifications * Guidelines and FAQ * User Manual We will be using the Wiki in conjunction with Launchpad ( https://launchpad.net/xibo). Launchpad will remain the system for Answer

Client Setup Tips

A few people have posted questions over in Launchpad recently asking for advice on how to setup Window to best support Xibo’s .net Client. There’s a new article over on the Wiki: http://labs.xibo.org.uk/blueprints/Home/documentation/-net-client-setup-steps It goes through some basic steps, eg turning off Windows sounds, power saving, screen savers etc as well as some general advice for working with Powerpoint items. I hope people find it useful.
